How We Farm | Mad Horse Farm
Pasture • Purpose • Regeneration
We believe the way an animal lives matters — for the animal, for the land, and for the food on your table.
Most farms say their animals are humanely raised. As veterinarians, Morgan and Jennifer can tell you exactly what that means in practice — and they’ve designed every part of this farm around it.
Animals that live with low stress are healthier, calmer, and produce better-tasting meat. That’s not marketing — it’s science. Here’s how we put it into practice:
We work closely with our animals every day — with the help of Fleet and Gem, our border collies — so being handled is normal and low-stress for them. A calm animal is a healthy animal.
They are never confined in feedlots. They have room to move, graze, and express natural behaviors in the environment they were built for.
Our animals are not loaded onto trucks for long trips or held for days waiting for slaughter. We keep the process as calm and efficient as possible — because the final moments matter too.
Animals are raised on time, pasture, and good nutrition — not shortcuts.
We never use antibiotics routinely or for growth. If an animal truly needs treatment, we treat it — then follow strict withdrawal times and keep detailed records. As vets, we take this seriously.
“Less stress is better for the animals — and it results in better-tasting, higher-quality meat.”
Our cattle and sheep are protected around the clock by three livestock guardian dogs who live with the herd year-round. They are not pets who visit the pasture — they live with the animals full time, forming deep bonds with the herd and instinctively watching over them day and night.
A traditional Italian breed with centuries of history protecting flocks from predators. Maremmas are calm, devoted, and deeply bonded to the animals in their care.
One of the oldest and most formidable livestock guardian breeds in the world, with an instinct for protection that goes back thousands of years.
Their presence allows our animals to graze calmly and without fear — which is exactly what we want. A relaxed animal is a healthy animal, and our guardians make that possible.
Our animals are outside in the fresh air and sunshine for the vast majority of their lives. They spend their days grazing, rooting, and foraging — doing exactly what they were meant to do.
Our animals have access to a run-in barn for shelter when they need it, but they choose when to use it. Pasture is the default — we don’t confine them based on weather.
We’re a pasture-based farm, and we’re also up-front about when and why we use grain. Different species and life stages have different nutritional needs, and we always feed to support health first — not to cut corners or speed things up.
They live on pasture and hay. We supplement with grain only during late pregnancy and early lactation, when moms and babies need extra nutritional support.
When animals are nearing market weight, we finish them on pasture plus grain. This combination supports good body condition, consistent marbling, and great flavor — while they still spend their days on grass.
Pigs are omnivores and can’t thrive on grass alone. Our pigs live on pasture where they can root and explore freely, and they receive a grain-based ration to meet their full nutritional needs.
We’re always happy to answer detailed questions about feed, breeds, or any other part of how we raise your food.
We use a rotational grazing system — moving our animals to fresh pasture frequently rather than leaving them in one place. It’s better for the animals and better for the land.
This approach gives animals access to clean, fresh forage at all times. It spreads manure evenly across the land, naturally fertilizing the soil without chemicals. It gives grazed areas time to rest and regrow fully before animals return. And over time, it builds healthier soils, deeper root systems, and more resilient pastures that can sustain the farm for generations.
Our pastures are a mix of grasses and clover. We work hard to keep them healthy and diverse — which reduces the need for reseeding and supports the long-term health of our land.
You deserve to know exactly how your food was raised. We’ve built this farm to be something we’re proud to stand behind completely — from the way our animals live, to the way they’re fed, to the way we care for the land beneath their feet.
If you ever have questions, we welcome them. That transparency is the whole point.
