Our Story

From a childhood dream to 250 acres of regenerative farmland — this is how Mad Horse Farm came to be.

Rooted in Agriculture

Morgan Dawkins grew up in rural southern Mississippi, surrounded by agriculture and a deep curiosity about where food comes from. Farming wasn’t just something he observed — it was something he wanted to be part of, especially when it came to raising animals and understanding what it means to be truly self-sustaining.

Where It All Began

That curiosity led Morgan to Warren Wilson College in North Carolina — a hands-on, working campus with its own farm — where he raised cattle and pigs, cooked for the campus community, and first discovered his love for stock dogs. It was there that he watched a farm manager use a border collie to move livestock with remarkable calm and precision, and he was hooked. Today, Morgan trains and trials border collies, and our animals are moved using low-stress herding — one of the most humane methods there is.

It was also at Warren Wilson that Morgan met Jennifer. They went on to the University of Tennessee together, where they both earned their veterinary degrees while living and working on a cattle farm.

After veterinary school, Morgan practiced mixed-animal medicine in southeastern Pennsylvania before transitioning to small animal and emergency care. He now owns a practice in Wilmington, DE. But no matter where his veterinary career took him, the dream of a farm of their own never faded.

The Dream Takes Shape

At the end of 2020, that dream became real. Morgan and Jennifer purchased 250 acres in southern New Jersey and got to work converting it from decades of row-crop use into a thriving regenerative operation.

What started with eggs, honey, and lamb has grown to include pasture-raised cattle, heritage breed pigs, sheep, and meat chickens — all raised using practices that support soil health, animal welfare, and food you can feel good about.

A Family Effort

Mad Horse Farm is truly a family operation. Their son Trevor lives on the farm and is hands-on with daily operations — the kind of presence and care that makes a real difference when you’re raising livestock. Collin has been instrumental in sharing the farm’s story through social media and marketing, helping connect the farm with people who care about where their food comes from. Sidney and Bailey, though not always nearby, show up when it counts — because that’s what family does.

The farm is also home to a dedicated canine crew. Fleet and Gem, our border collies, work alongside Morgan daily — moving and managing the livestock with remarkable calm and precision. Cupid and Whiskey, our Maremmas, and Brandy, our Central Asian Shepherd, serve as livestock guardian dogs, living with the herd year-round to keep our animals safe and calm around the clock.

What’s Ahead

The vision is bigger still: a true farm-to-table operation with on-farm processing and in-house butchering, so you know exactly where your food comes from, start to finish — from the pasture to your plate.
